How to be a Gentleman / Lady in Business? Honestly, for most of my life I assumed that everybody is a good person on the inside. Then I started to be proven wrong. Living in South Africa has its hardships. I have been mugged and had all my possessions stolen many times, which ultimately ended up giving me quite a sour view of my country. I understand that because of the insanely high unemployment, most people are forced into a life of crime, but still, it really doesn’t have to be like that.
So how exactly do you deal with such negativity in your everyday life? I like to use the following philosophy; trust easily, but be extremely aware. Obviously you should be the nicest, most genuine person you possibly can, but don’t get carried away with your emotions on the inside. This has happened to me with friends, girlfriends, and even family friends. Understand that there are good people out there, but you really cannot be sure anymore. So I like to be open to trusting somebody, but always watch my back.
Now onto being a Gentleman / Lady. What I find best is that is you stay extremely humble, and often lead from the back. What do I mean by this. Well you can either lead from the front, who are seen as the conventional ‘leaders’, or you can lead in secret from behind. This goes hand in hand with being humble. Most people won’t really notice this quality, but the people who do pick up on it, wow does it make an impact. Those are the people who will do business with you.
In day to day life you should aim to be an absolute treat to be around. You don’t have to be bombastic so that everybody notices how nice you are, just be nice and people will notice. Don’t go over the top and start like giving away money or anything like that, but do subtle things like buy somebody a chocolate if they go out of their way for you.
Top Tips for Being a Gentleman / Lady
Here is my list of top tips, which I think should always be followed:
- Stand when giving handshakes.
- Wish 3 people happiness every day**.
- Show every person the utmost respect, even if they don’t deserve it.
- Hold the door if a person is within 5 meters of it.
- Never smell bad / have bad breath.
- Give 3 compliments to any human, every day.
- Be on time, every time.
- Under promise and over deliver.
- Never talk badly about people, to others.
If you follow these pointers, you will be okay. Just try not be a dick and you will be alright! Prove yourself as a trustworthy source.
My Best Advice
My favorite point from the list above would be to wish 3 people happiness everyday. This doesn’t mean that you have to actually wish them, but rather do this in your thoughts. If you see somebody today just think to yourself, “I hope that girls receives all the happiness in the world”. This will make such a difference since you are giving out so much love and appreciation to each person you wish. This may not fall under the category of being a gentleman, but it affects everything and makes a difference. Trust me.
One the topic of being a nice person, remember that you can still say, “Sorry, that doesn’t work for me”. This is often overlooked when you are trying to be nice. It will be bad for both parties if you accept a request and then end up resenting that person. Always remember that being a gentleman / lady involves having the confidence to say ‘No’. I used to make up many excuses as to why I didn’t want to do something, but now that I have started saying ‘No’ to things that don’t suit me, my quality of life has become much better.
